My Personal Fitness Routine

Stick with It Fitness Routine

the only bad workout is the one that didn't happenThe best exercise for you is the one you can stick with. It has to fit your lifestyle.

I’ve often said that if I won a lottery, I would gift all my friends with a home recumbent bike. It’s the best material investment towards health I’ve ever made.

I began to take fitness seriously as a university undergraduate. I was a runner. My running days finally culminated with training for and completing a half-marathon when I turned 40. My good friend and neighbour Michele and I trained and ran it together.

But…I soon realized my body wasn’t made for running. Despite the training, the impact on my joints was felt for days after.

Since then my workouts have changed to include regular interval training on my home recumbent bike. The convenience and ease of these workouts I believe is what has kept me free of Type 2 diabetes which runs in my family. I supplement my bike intervals with strength training with weights and floor exercises. I also walk an hour every morning. I begin my days with a walk and cardio. It’s a habit that’s formed over years.

As a young teacher-mom and long before the advent of Fitbit, I would wake up in the morning and literally jog around the house while preparing breakfast, getting my young daughters ready for school and daycare, etc. I just kept moving. As a teacher when I wasn’t on lunch supervision, I ran with a couple of colleagues during lunch hour a few times a week. I did everything to fit fitness into my lifestyle.

I have worked out in gyms and have enjoyed the comaraderie of working out with others, but as time evolved, my preference was to sweat alone at home and take a bath in my own tub. On this path, I’ve garnered the expertise of personal trainers to tweak my workouts from time to time.

I do love the routine I have now. I will share the specifics of my workouts in upcoming posts.
